This evap emissions pump is used to fill the gas tank and vapor lines with a slight pressure. Then test for leaks by seeing if the system looses the pressure supplied by the pump. If your pump has gone bad it may set a evap code that comes back even if your car has been tested for a leak. This pump is a direct replacement genuine VW part.
